第13届冈瓦纳超大陆国际学术大会将于2008年9月15-18日在中国云南大理召开，9月19-22日进行会后野外地质考察。冈瓦纳超大陆国际学术大会是国际地球科学届一个非常重要的系列会议，每3年举行一次，历届与会人数在300-600人。此次会议将为国际地球科学家提供一个广泛学术前沿研究成果和学术思想交流的平台。第十二届大会2005年在巴西召开，与会的各国科学家500余人。会上由澳、美、德、日等国联合建议十三届大会在中国召开。之后经协商，中国方面同意组织本次会议，地点商定在云南大理市。
      本次会议将由中国科学院、中国国家自然科学基金委员会、云南省大理市、澳大利亚科庭技术大学、中国科学院地质与地球物理研究所等部门和学术机构共同举办，中国科学院院士孙枢教授任大会科学委员会主任，中国科学院地质与地球物理研究所翟明国教授任大会组织委员会主任，肖文交、李献华任秘书。

会议将以大会特邀报告、口头报告和展板等形式进行学术交流，工作语言为英语。会议期间将安排1天的会间地质考察，考察洱海、苍山和腾冲第四纪火山地貌以及大理古城。会后将安排4条地质考察路线，包括：
1、兰平盆地和中国最大的铅锌矿
2、哀牢山-红河断裂带
3、澄江动物群化石
4、晚二叠峨眉山大火成岩省及钒钛磁铁矿
