Objet : IAEG council
Dear Colleagues,
The IAEG council gathered in Nottingham
(United Kingdom) on 6th September 2006. You will soon receive the minutes
of this meeting.
The main decisions taken after
a secret vote deal with :
¨C the approval of the proposal
of cooperation agreement in order to create a Federation of Inter-national
Geo-engineering Societies (FIGS), established by the presidents of the
IAEG, the ISRM and the ISSMGE. This approval was acquired in the majority
of two thirds (43 votes for, 10 votes against, 1 abstention) ;
¨C the election of the IAEG executive
committee for the period 1st January 2007 - 31st December 2010. You will
find herewith the list and contact details of members elected to all positions
;
¨C the designation of the hosting
country which will welcome the 11th IAEG international congress : Auckland,
Aoteoroa, New Zealand.
On the other hand, it has been
decided to hold the IAEG council meeting for 2007 at further venue and
date :
Vail, Colorado (USA)
Sunday 3rd June 2007
on the opportunity of the 1st
North American Landslide Conference to take place there from 3rd to 10th
June 2007.
The web site of the conference
is : http://www.mines.edu/academic/geology/landslidevail2007/.
This council meeting will be
preceded by a meeting of the executive committee on Saturday 2nd June
2007.
Among points of the agenda of
the council meeting will be included a proposal to increase the number
of pages of the bulletin of our association, which implies an increase
of the fee paid by the members with bulletin. You will find herewith a
letter pr¨¦cising this proposal so that it can be exam-ined by each national
group before the council meeting.
In the end, the executive committee
will nominate on its meeting in Vail the awardees for 2008 of Hans-Cloos
medal and Richard-Wolters prize. You will find herewith a call for nominations.
Yours sincerely,
Michel Deveugh¨¨le

Objet : Bulletin - Fees
Dear Colleagues,
Our Bulletin of Engineering Geology and
the Environment has developed well during the recent years. The number
of papers received and the quality of the papers has increased considerably.
As a result the Bulletin has also been included in the Science Citation
Index, which makes it more interesting for those working in Academia to
publish in the Bulletin.
IAEG has always had the objectives
not only to publish papers of good quality in its Bulletin, but also to
offer a forum for publication for IAEG members in countries where Engineering
Geology is still in development. This means that there are many more suitable
papers being offered than what can now be published in the pre-sent 432
pages per year. The Executive Committee has for this reason discussed
with the Editor in Chief Brian Hawkins the possibility of raising the
number of pages up to about 500 in 2007 and up to about 600 in 2008. This
would be possible but the publisher would charge the IAEG 4 € more per
subscription (24 € in-stead of 20 € per year).
Our present IAEG membership
fees are structured as follows :
|
|
Without bulletin |
With bulletin |
Members of national groups |
Normal fee |
12 € |
32 € |
Reduced fee |
4 € |
24 € |
Individual members (with bulletin) |
45 € |
Associated members (with bulletin)
|
150 € |
We propose to modify these fees by raising the Bulletin component in the
membership fee by 5 € per year for the years 2008 to 2011. The extra 1
€ will give us a little more flexibility in the future to compensate the
pub-lisher for costs of inflation without the necessity to raise our fees
again. This means a 25 % price increase for a more than 35 % increase
of number of pages.
Furthermore we propose to introduce
a new category of membership, "Individual members without bulletin",
for 25 € per year. This new category is necessary as we are attracting
individual members worldwide through the new possibility to register as
IAEG member through the web site.
All together this would lead
to the following new fee structure valid from January 2008 :
|
|
Without bulletin |
With bulletin |
Members of national groups |
Normal fee |
12 € |
37 € |
Reduced fee |
4 € |
29 € |
Individual members (with bulletin) |
25 € |
50 € |
Associated members (with bulletin)
|
150 € |
As we would like to give your national group the opportunity to warn your
membership and take appropriate measures in time, we already announce
now that we propose to make these new fees effective on 1st Janu-ary 2008.
A formal decision however will still have to be taken in the next Council
Meeting in Vail (USA) in June 2007.
Yours sincerely,
Michel Deveugh¨¨le

IAEG Past Presidents
O/Ref. : MD/FN ¨C 2006-059
Subject : 2008 Hans-Cloos Medal and Richard-Wolters Prize
Call for nominations
Dear Colleagues,
According to IAEG statutes and by-laws, Hans-Cloos
Medal and Richard-Wolters Prize will be awarded in 2008.
The Hans-Cloos Medal is the senior award presented
by IAEG, given to an engineering geologist of outstanding merit in commemoration
of the "founder of geomechanics". The recipient should therefore
be a person of international repute who has made a major contribution
to engineering ge-ology in his/her written papers or to the development
of engineering geology and/or the IAEG in their own area.
The Richard-Wolters Prize specifically recognises
meritorious scientific achievement by a youn-ger member of the engineering
geology profession (less than fourty years old on 1st January 2004) and
is awarded to honour Dr. Wolters' many contributions to international
understanding and co-operation.
Nominations must normally be made by a national
group but members of the Executive Committee and Past Presidents may also
propose individuals. Nominations must be sent to the IAEG Sec-retary General
not later than 31st March 2007.
The nominator shall provide :
¨C a statement of support for the nominee which
should not be longer than two single-spaced A4 pages ;
¨C a copy of the nominee's curriculum vitae ;
¨C a list of publications (identifying the three
most important papers, for a nominee to Richard-Wolters Prize).
Nominations to these awards will be examined
by IAEG Executive Committee on its 2007 meeting in Vail, Colorado (USA)
on 2nd June 2007.
We are expecting you to send us excellent nominations.
Yours sincerely,
Dr Michel Deveugh¨¨le
